We are thrilled to announce that Signals from the Grassroots, through our founder and CEO, Ssenyange Apollo, has been honored with the prestigious Diana Award!

Established in memory of Diana, Princess of Wales, with support from both her sons, The Duke of Cambridge and The Duke of Sussex, The Diana Award is the most prestigious accolade a young person aged 9-25 years can receive for their social action or humanitarian work.

This recognition is a testament to the impact we relentlessly pursue in our mission of “ Mainstreaming young people in shaping and bettering the world” and our vision of becoming “the hub of globally enlightened and dignified young men and women championing positive change.”

Signals from the Grassroots Advocates for Youth Empowerment and Food Security at the 2023 High-level Political Forum on Sustainable Development

During the HLPF, the president of Signals from the Grassroots, Ssenyange Apollo, had the honorable opportunity to address esteemed organizations such as the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO), the World Food Programme (WFP), the International Fund for Agricultural Development (IFAD), the United Nations Children's Fund (UNICEF), and the World Health Organization (WHO). His compelling speech echoed the concerns and aspirations of youth, urging global leaders to empower the younger generation as the torchbearers of society.

In his poignant address, Apollo highlighted the urgent issue of hunger and malnutrition, emphasizing that every three minutes, 33 individuals succumb to starvation, with seven of them being innocent children robbed of their future. He underscored the gravity of these statistics and urged the international community to confront the inequities that persist in the world.

Apollo passionately spoke on behalf of young people globally who deeply fear this reality and are rising to the occasion, founding and leading initiatives to combat hunger and food insecurity. He cited examples of Act4Food, a global youth pledge uniting over 160,000 young people, and Signals from the Grassroots, which has reached over 4,000 young people in 54 countries across five continents, raising awareness about the urgent need to reduce food loss and promoting actionable steps.

The address eloquently conveyed the immense potential young people possess to make a difference in the world. Apollo appealed for mentorship, seed funding, and grants to ensure the sustainability of youth-led projects. My Journey: Overcoming the Shadows, Embracing the Light

Greetings, I am Shantal Kisimba, an Environmentalist by profession, and a dedicated Mental Health Advocate and Champion. Through my personal experience with mental illness, I have embarked on a mission to eradicate stigma and discrimination associated with mental health, using my platform called Sunshine. This brand radiates hope, inspiration, and motivation, illuminating the darkest days in people's lives.

In 2019, the awareness of my mental health state began when I received my initial diagnosis of anxiety disorder, specifically panic attacks. At first, physical symptoms manifested—an unsettling rhythm of palpitations, muscle pain, shortness of breath, and an unrelenting restlessness. Seeking medical advice, I underwent an X-ray to assess the condition of my lungs, only to discover that everything was normal. It was then that my doctor revealed I was grappling with anxiety disorder, and I was promptly prescribed medication to manage the attacks.

Continuing with my treatment, the year 2021 proved to be a turning point as my condition deteriorated. Overwhelmed by constant feelings of melancholy, exhaustion, hopelessness, and a dwindling zest for life, I lost interest in my passions and carried the weight of the world on my shoulders. It was at this juncture that I sought professional help, leading to my second diagnosis of depression—a mood disorder that forever altered the trajectory of my life. Each day became a burdensome journey, plagued by emptiness and despair, and I found myself grappling with the weight of this overwhelming baggage.

In the midst of my struggle, suicidal thoughts began to haunt me. Yet, it was the presence of loved ones and my willingness to openly share these dark thoughts that kept me afloat, if only momentarily. Medication became a lifeline, aiding me in managing both anxiety disorder and depression, as I persevered through my treatment.

October 2021 marked a profoundly distressing experience. The severity of my panic attacks escalated to the point of collapse. My doctor reassured me that such manifestations can occur during severe panic attacks and offered hope that they would eventually subside. Encouraged by his words, I soldiered on, clinging to the belief that brighter days were on the horizon.

However, 2022 proved to be the most tumultuous year of all. My symptoms worsened, and a new mental illness emerged. Alongside panic attacks and depression, I experienced periods of complete detachment from daily activities, succumbing to excessive sleep and uncontrollable tears, consumed by the agony I endured. Self-harming thoughts began to plague my mind, leading to several attempts, driven by sheer exhaustion. It was evident that my mental health had deteriorated beyond measure, prompting my family to seek further evaluation from another psychiatrist. Confusion enveloped me as I grappled with symptoms I couldn't comprehend. I started believing that people could hear my thoughts or that I had engaged in conversations that never actually occurred. These delusions expanded, infiltrating even my experiences on social media, where my mind convinced me I had made posts that were never created. After a session with the psychiatrist, I received the diagnosis of Schizoaffective disorder—a mental illness characterized by the coexistence of depression and schizophrenia. In my case, it meant confronting the challenges of both depression and schizophrenia.

The presence of schizophrenia fueled delusional thoughts, distorting my perception of reality. My life came to a grinding halt as these overwhelming delusions consumed me, gradually intensifying over time. Treatment commenced swiftly, with antipsychotic medication administered to manage the symptoms, coupled with therapy sessions to equip me with coping mechanisms. My therapist guided me in developing a deeper understanding of myself, empowering me to navigate the labyrinth of delusions that had entangled my mind.

This Earth Day, we are proud to celebrate one of our own, Paul, for his incredible work in saving nature in his community. Paul, together with a friend, undertook the noble task of planting trees to help restore the environment in their neighborhood.

Paul's passion for the environment is admirable, and he strongly believes in the importance of preserving nature for future generations. He says, "If you cannot plant a tree, at least enjoy the beauty nature can offer and keep it safe to preserve the environment. A word to fellow youth

Our president shared a powerful speech to fellow leaders of tomorrow, urging us to use our voices and take action to shape the world we want to live in.

Below are his words;

How do you explain when things don’t go as we assume? Or better, how do you explain when others are able to achieve things that seem to defy all of the assumptions? We often look at successful individuals and wonder what it is that sets them apart from the rest. We tend to believe that they possess some sort of magical quality, some talent that we do not have. But the truth is, they simply possess the courage to act on their potential, and we as the youth, have that same potential within us.

Fellow young people, we are living in a time of unprecedented change and challenge. Our world is facing pressing problems such as climate change, poverty, inequality, and political instability. These problems can be overwhelming, but we cannot afford to sit back and wait for someone else to solve them. It is time for us to step up and take action.

We have a unique perspective on the world, and we have the energy and passion to bring about real change. We must have the courage to challenge old ideas and practices that have led to these problems. We must have the courage to be proactive and take action to make the world a better place.

But how do we start? We can start by educating ourselves on the issues that we care about. We can reach out to our local communities and find ways to get involved in making positive changes. We can use our social media platforms to spread awareness and inspire others to take action.

We must also be willing to take risks and embrace failure. We will not always succeed, but every failure is an opportunity to learn and grow. We must be willing to learn from our mistakes and continue to push forward towards our goals.

Fellow young people, we have the power to create a better future for ourselves and for generations to come. Let us have the courage to act on our potential and take action to solve the most pressing problems in our society. Let us be proactive and lead the way towards a brighter future. Together, we can make a difference."
